Dawn on the Coast (Baby-Sitters Club) Review

Dawn used to be a California girl until her parents' divorce. Then her mother packed up Dawn and her brother Jeff to move back her old hometown in Connecticut. Eventually Dawn made friends and a new life for herself but her brother did not and returned to California making the family even more divided than before. As the story opens Dawn is leaving to spend her spring break back in California with her father and brother and her old friends. Before long she finds that in her heart she is still a California girl but that she also loves her new life in Connecticut which leaves her with a huge problem - should she get on the plane at the end of her vacation or not?
This is #23 in the popular BABYSITTERS CLUB series. The books in this series focus on a group of young teenage girls in a small Connecticut town. Each book in the series focuses on one of the girls although each one appears to some extent. Each chapter opens with a handwritten note (journal entry, postcard, letter etc) by one of the girls commenting on the upcoming events. The series overall has several ongoing arcs that are moved along in a chronological manner but each book could be read and enjoyed independently or out of series order. The reading level of this series is 4th grade and appeals primarily to 3rd through 5th grade girls. The stories themselves are well written, the characters are believeable and appealing, remaining consistent throughout the series. The situations the girls find themselves in are realistic and dealt with in a reasonable manner.
The series is a bit dated at this point - this particular book was written in 1989 - so that a young reader today might be a bit confused by some of the references to 'current' movies or the relaxed air travel of twenty years ago. Overall though the story itself still speaks to problems faced by many young girls today.

Dawn on the Coast (Baby-Sitters Club) Overview

Visiting her father on the west coast, Dawn is tempted to stay with him when she enjoys the beach, Disneyland, and a wealth of healthy restaurants, but the homesick baby-sitter fears leaving her mother and all of her friends. Reissue.

The Magic School Bus Chapter Book Boxed Set, Books 1-8: Penguin Puzzle, The Great Shark Escape, The Giant Germ, Twister Trouble, Space Explorers, The Wild Whale Watch, The Search for the Missing Bones, and The Truth About Bats Review

My daughter reads me a chapter from one of these books each night before bed. The books are interesting and provide excellent information in an entertaining way. I think they are great for readers at the 2nd and 3rd grade levels.

The Reptile Room (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 2) Review

Though this is only the second book, it feels like the same method has been overused. I mean seriously, you know that the orphans go to new guardians, and encounter Count Olaf over and over, but in different ways. So what is to look forward to in this book? Well not much, but if you really want to know, then its the drama, and well...the small time of happiness the Baudelaires experienced with Uncle Monty (I actually enjoyed that). I will split this into several parts to make it easier to understand, also I will show my opinion of Olaf and how he got into the Baudelaires world.
Drama: This was the first book in the series, to have a murder of a Guardian. This death was actually expected, in my opinion. This is because, we already know what Count Olaf would do to get these miserable orphans fortune, so why not expect him to kill as well?
OLAF AND HIS DISGUISES: I personally got a kick out of his disguise in this book. It was simple, yet the fact he had convinced everyone he was "Gunther" made the whole disguise even funnier. It actually was funny, when the Baudelaires found him out the second they saw him. I mean I find it ironic, that no one recognized him, and the only people who did recognize him where the Baudelaires.
HIS PLAN: I think that his plan to gain the Baudelaire fortune, was stupid. I mean seriously, he tried to frame Uncle Monty's vast collection of snakes, on Monty's death. He left so much evidence around Uncle Monty, that only an idiot would miss it. Apparently everyone in this series are actually idiots and show ignorance, except the Baudelaires, if you haven't noticed. Well back to the plan, then Olaf was going to take the orphans to Peru, which was the trip Monty was going to take them on. Olaf would have full control over the orphans if Monty had died, and according to his plan, they would leave before any police or any official awareness.
Plot Development: No plot development at all. Actually there is no plot development until the fifth book.
Characters: (Old/reoccurring: Sunny, Violet, Klaus Baudelaire. Mr Poe. Count Olaf and his troup.)(New: Uncle Monty, Gustav.)Final Review: 3/5
Verdict: This book did not contribute to the story growth. Therefore I call this a filler chapter, and is a part of Act 1 of the story. Good book at times, but same old. Boring, might entertain some.

Claudia And The Sad Good-bye (Baby-Sitters Club: Collector's Edition) Review

claudia and her grandmother mimi were so close. She would come from school everyday and together they would drink 'special tea' in beautiful japanese tea cups as displayed on the cover and mimi was the only one who understood claudia in her family. Mimi had a stroke recently but was doing fine for some time but her health begins to decline in this book and she's had to be rushed to the hospital a few times after collapsing and was sent home, but after being sent back a second time and saying she was doing fine she passed away peacefully in her sleep. Claudia experienced so many emotions that she couldn't grasp or understand throughout the events following the death. She felt sad, angry, abandoned and so forth and those feelings are real. Her family helped her out at the end though come to terms with it and it made me cry too cause my great grandmother passed away when I was a kid and I remember not knowing how to feel myself, happy cause she was in no more pain and in a better place, or sad cause i will never see her again and stuff like that.

Dawn and Too Many Sitters (Baby-Sitters Club, No. 98) Review

"Dawn and Too Many Sitters" has a great plot, and that's why I rate it a 10. It's funny. Dawn Schafer's younger brother, Jeff, and Mallory Pike's younger brothers, Adam, Byron, and Jordan, decide they want to be baby-sitters too. But there are some drawbacks: Jeff hates smelly diapers, and didn't want to change Andrea Prezzioso's; and Adam goes with Stacey to sit for Matt and Haley Braddock and Adam and Haley get into a fight. It probably happened because Haley is nine and Adam is ten. I think that maybe Jeff, Adam, Jordan and Byron are too young to baby-sit.

Dawn and Too Many Sitters (Baby-Sitters Club, No. 98) Overview

Summertime in Stoneybrook find the members of the Baby-sitters Club overwhelmed by client demands and a forthcoming trip to Hawaii, a situation that results in the enlistment of three unlikely sitters-in-training.
