Baby-Sitters Winter Vacation (Baby-Sitters Club Super Special) Review

I loved this book, and have read it alot, but the only thing I think is that Jessi should get over herself! Its annoying because she thinks Pinky (who is about SIX) is predjuduced, just because she's being mean to her. I mean, come on! I didn't like that bit because it is really annoying how she thinks anyone who does anything that isnt nice is treating her like that because she's black. I don't think that was especially true. But basically it was a good book. Claudia and Stacey both fall head over heals with french skiers, the only thing is- Claudia's "guy" is married! Kristy is captain of the Red team, and gets to competitive. Meanwhile, a whole busload of kids have been stranded in the snow, and the BSC decided to take them on. It was a good book!

It's another summer on Cape Cod and Willa's summer is full of adventures. Her Aunt Ruthie is coming to the inn and Willa gets to plan the entire wedding. Ruthie can be a little headstrong though, and her all-green wedding turns into quite an affair for Willa the wedding planner.
Willa also feels like she might be drifting apart from her best friend, Tina, and JFK is heading off to spend the summer at a sports internship. There's also a mysterious dog who shows up on the beach and Willa is trying to convince her mom she's ready for a pet. One thing's for sure, Willa's summer is going to be full of surprises!
Oh Willa, you always make me smile. No matter what her adventures or schemes, Willa is always up to something and it's a trip you want to take with her.
With FORGET ME NOT as the fourth book in this series, Willa is growing up and author Coleen Murtagh Paratore takes us through Willa's maturity with graceful ease. Willa is still relatable to tween readers, but I think the series could appeal to teen readers as Willa herself grows older. There's a lot packed into this short book, but I think that's one of Ms. Paratore's strengths - her characters are well-developed and the story is so well told that she can make a short story so filling to the reader.
I'm eager to see where Willa's story takes her next and where the author is leading us. The ending will leave you wanting more and I can't wait to get my hands on the next Willa book. I'll always be happy for a trip to Cape Cod with my favorite wedding planner and book lover!

Camp is supposed to be fun, or is it? Sarah hates it. The thought of getting in a lake that is gross and slimy make her sick thinking about. On top of it nobody wants to be her water buddy except Della, who may be be her buddy for life!
The reason I liked the book was because it was very suspensful and very creepy. The part I liked most about the book was Sarah's plan to act like she is drowning, but what she doesn't know is that her plan will back fire and that there is someone at the bottom of that lake with pale blue eyes and a see through body! It is a great book for all ages, and I would definitely recommend it!

This book does a wonderful job in breaking down their science experiments into seasons; Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer. The first few pages of the book are dedicated to using science in your classroom, including using journals. Each activity is well layed out, and easy to follow. They list the materials needed, the aim of the activity, a warm-up, the activity, things to remember, observations, books that tie into the activity, and also some spin-off projects. This book could also be used by younger classes. To gain five stars, I would have liked to had more involved projects. I think sometimes, we under-estimate the learning capabilities of our kids.

The Fluent Reader: Oral Reading Strategies for Building Word Recognition, Fluency, and Comprehension Review

This book was a lifesaver for me, when I was thrown in with a class of middle-school students who had very poor reading skills. I used a number of the techniques described in the book, with good results: paired reading for very low readers (which I also encouraged their parents to do with them); Fluency Development Lesson for the whole class (reading poetry aloud, both whole class and in pairs); and much more. This book promotes oral reading, which I think is imperative in boosting reading skills (in contrast to my college professors, who said "never require students to read out loud"), and also gives a good, concise background on how and why oral reading fell out of favor. This book is easy to read, and gets across a lot of information in as painless a way as possible. Each chapter describes a particular technique, and then has a "(that technique) at a glance" box at the end that summarizes the information. I had looked at all the books on fluency I could find, and selected this as the best, and I recommend it without reservation. I used Jack Prelutsky's "Something Big Has Been Here" book of poetry for the Fluency Development Lesson, and it was awesome. Clever, humorous poetry that appeal to kids, but contain very sophisticated vocabulary, which became the basis of our vocabulary study.
The other two books that were part of my "reading instruction triumvirate": "Teaching Phonics and Word Study in the Intermediate Grades" by Wiley Blevins, and "Building Reading Comprehension Habits in Grades 6-12: a Toolkit of Activities" by Jeff Zwiers. Both indispensable.
