Karen's New Bike (Baby-Sitter's Little Sister #62) Review
Synopsis: The book starts off with Karen Brewer, playing with her best friends Hannie Papadakis and Nancy Dawes in school. Ms. Colman, their second grade teacher, announces that this month is "Bike Safety Month" and they would be learning how to ride their bikes safely. She also talks about holding a bike-a-thon to raise money for the Stoneybrook Medical Center, and asks the students to find sponsors for the event.Karen realizes that her present bike is getting old and not too safe for her to ride on. She asks her father to get the Cougar Cat bicycle for her. Her father says that he would buy it considering that she paid for part of it. Karen agrees and thinks of an idea to make more money. She decides on making stationary for all her family members with her drawings.
Later, Ms. Colman tells the students that in order to participate in the bike-a-thon, they would have to take a bike safety test at Town Hall, and also register their bikes. Apart from this, there would also be a bike sale, where the students could sell the bikes that they didn't use anymore.
Karen manages to get her family and friends to sponsor, as well as earn enough money to buy her dream bike. She also passes the test and registers her bike in Town Hall and cannot wait to ride the bike at the bike-a-thon! However, Karen's happiness is shattered when she rides to the playground with Nancy and Hannie and finds it stolen!
Can Karen retrieve her bike in time to ride the bike-a-thon?
Review: I liked reading this book because it was the first book which dealt with a serious theft that happens to Karen, rather than Karen losing or misplacing something. I found parts of the book interesting when Karen decides what to do to find her stolen bike, and how she goes about retrieving it.
The illustrations were also wonderfully drawn, and I especially liked the ones where Karen is riding her bike with her friends, and when she is talking with the police officer.
This story in this book felt more realistic to me than other books because it talks about how people would steal bikes and sell it to others for a cheap price, so even though my first impression on reading the story was that the family who had Karen's bike were responsible for stealing it, I later realized that they too, were victims to the thieves.
The book also provides useful information and teaches the readers about how to use the various hand signals when riding a bicycle, as well as precautions one should take when riding it, such as putting the helmet on, or rolling up your pant legs so that it doesn't get tangled with the wheels.
Overall, I enjoyed this book, and thought it is a nice addition to the series.
