Karen's Promise (Baby-Sitters Club Little Sister) Review

Synopsis: The book starts off with Karen thinking about her stepfather Seth moving with their mother to Chicago for six months. She spends every other month living with her father, and the rest of the year with her mother. She wonders what the situation would be if her mother and Seth moved to Chicago. Andrew asks Karen if she go anywhere without him. Karen promises Andrew that no matter what happens, she will stay with Andrew.
Later, when she talks with Nannie, her step grandmother, Nannie tells her how excited she is because she just received her first big order for making candy basket centerpieces for the hospital. When Ms. Colman announces that she is hosting a dinner at Stoneybrook Manor for the old people to raise money, Karen suggests she order candy baskets from Nannie, hoping that Nannie got more customers. However, when she mentions the news to Nannie, Nannie feels upset because she has a lot of work as it is. The children decide to help Nannie make the candy, but it ends up in a disaster! If matters weren't bad enough, the kids in the class overhear Nannie's candy, and want to sample some themselves!
When Karen's parents and her step parents hold a meeting, Karen's mother tells her that they would be taking Andrew to Chicago with them, but Karen can decide if she wants to stay in Stoneybrook or not. Karen is relieved that she can still stay in her school with her friends, but then she remembers her promise to Andrew. Karen's friends, Hannie and Nancy plead with her to reconsider and stay, but Karen doesn't know what to do. Afterward, in school, when Ms. Colman announces the students to do a group project on their selected cities, Karen suggests Chicago, so that she can learn more about it.
Will Karen decide to leave Stoneybrook and go to Chicago, and will Nannie be able to complete all her orders in time?
Review: I really liked reading this book, because it shows how hard it is to make decisions sometimes, and how the promises we make affect others. I sympathized with Karen as she had to decide whether or not she could go with the promise she made to Andrew.
I also enjoyed the main storyline, which I felt for Nannie's pressure to complete the orders, and how the children always made a mess of everything, causing Nannie more work and stress. The book also provided some useful information on the history of Chicago and the Great Fire that happened there.
The illustrations as always, were gorgeously drawn by Susan Tang, in which I especially admired the one where Karen, Kristy and Nannie look shocked over the spilled chocolate, and the one of Karen delivering the candy basket to the citizens of Stoneybrook Manor.
This book also ends in a suspenseful way, which I thought was interesting because other books in the series don't usually end this way, but I liked it because now it makes me want to pick up the next book "Karen's Big Move" and see what happens to her.

ms colman is getting married and karen is her flower girl but then her niece makes it for the wedding and karen becomes friends with her and they both become flower girls. Also karen and her classmates buy a surprise wedding gift for ms. colman. It was nice of her to invite every single classmate and their families but realistically I don't think that would happen in real life.

Karen's Wedding (Baby-Sitters Little Sister, No. 39) Overview

When Ms. Coleman asks Karen to be a flower girl in her wedding, the little girl could not be happier.

Karen's School Picture (Baby-Sitters Little Sister, No. 5) Review

I first read this years ago when I was 8, sometime after I got glasses when I was 7 and I could relate to the book somewhat when Karen was teased for her glasses, I myself had pink glasses when I was younger and because Karen was proud of her glasses by the time the book ended, I tried to be too because I wanted to be just like her. My favourite parts of the book were when Karen made a list of jokes to play on Ricky, and when Kristy took her to the library to look at pictures of cartoons who also wore glasses.

Karen's School Picture (Baby-Sitters Little Sister, No. 5) Overview

Karen, who's just found out that she needs glasses, has to decide whether or not to wear them in the school pictures.

Karen's Prize (Baby-Sitters Little Sister, No. 11) Review

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books that have a lot of action in them. I only wish the author would make her books more realistic. It is not very likely for a second grader to become the most succesful junior speller in her state, and karen seems to have unusual luck in contests in a number of Ann M. Martin's novels. Overall, I really liked it and I think you will too!

Karen's Prize (Baby-Sitters Little Sister, No. 11) Overview

Karen wins the school spelling contest and begins calling herself "Queen Bee." Things get worse when she wins the county contest as well and gets her picture in the paper. But at the state spelling championship, Karen gets a less in h-u-m-i-l-i-t-y.

Karen's Haircut (Baby-Sitters Little Sister) Review

it's nice karen wanted to feel good about herself and went to the hairdresser's, but it's SO UNREALISTIC that the hair dresser would cut her hair all wrong, especially when karen is just a little kid and she gave the hairdresser a picture of the haircut she really wanted!! But it's still a good read, and though hannie was being mean, karen was really cute when she started sneaking makeup to school, and hannie's pretend wedding to scott was unrealistic but adorable. It's a nice read if you're about 7 or 8, the age I was when I bought this book

Karen's Haircut (Baby-Sitters Little Sister) Overview

Poor Karen is feeling ugly. Not only does she have glasses, but now her two front adult teeth have grown in and they look like "rabbit teeth." Karen and her mother go to the beauty shop for a makeover. But Gloriana snips away madly and Karen is left with a punk haircut she hates. What will she do about school tomorrow?

Karen's New Bike (Baby-Sitter's Little Sister #62) Review

Synopsis: The book starts off with Karen Brewer, playing with her best friends Hannie Papadakis and Nancy Dawes in school. Ms. Colman, their second grade teacher, announces that this month is "Bike Safety Month" and they would be learning how to ride their bikes safely. She also talks about holding a bike-a-thon to raise money for the Stoneybrook Medical Center, and asks the students to find sponsors for the event.
Karen realizes that her present bike is getting old and not too safe for her to ride on. She asks her father to get the Cougar Cat bicycle for her. Her father says that he would buy it considering that she paid for part of it. Karen agrees and thinks of an idea to make more money. She decides on making stationary for all her family members with her drawings.
Later, Ms. Colman tells the students that in order to participate in the bike-a-thon, they would have to take a bike safety test at Town Hall, and also register their bikes. Apart from this, there would also be a bike sale, where the students could sell the bikes that they didn't use anymore.
Karen manages to get her family and friends to sponsor, as well as earn enough money to buy her dream bike. She also passes the test and registers her bike in Town Hall and cannot wait to ride the bike at the bike-a-thon! However, Karen's happiness is shattered when she rides to the playground with Nancy and Hannie and finds it stolen!
Can Karen retrieve her bike in time to ride the bike-a-thon?
Review: I liked reading this book because it was the first book which dealt with a serious theft that happens to Karen, rather than Karen losing or misplacing something. I found parts of the book interesting when Karen decides what to do to find her stolen bike, and how she goes about retrieving it.
The illustrations were also wonderfully drawn, and I especially liked the ones where Karen is riding her bike with her friends, and when she is talking with the police officer.
This story in this book felt more realistic to me than other books because it talks about how people would steal bikes and sell it to others for a cheap price, so even though my first impression on reading the story was that the family who had Karen's bike were responsible for stealing it, I later realized that they too, were victims to the thieves.
The book also provides useful information and teaches the readers about how to use the various hand signals when riding a bicycle, as well as precautions one should take when riding it, such as putting the helmet on, or rolling up your pant legs so that it doesn't get tangled with the wheels.
Overall, I enjoyed this book, and thought it is a nice addition to the series.

Karen's New Bike (Baby-Sitter's Little Sister #62) Overview

Learning all about bike safety and entering the annual bike-a-thon with a brand-new two-wheeler, Karen turns detective when her bike is stolen and has an adventure that ends in an act of charity and a new friend.

Karen's Witch (Baby-Sitters Little Sister, No. 1) Review

Synopsis: The book starts off with Karen Brewer explaining how she has two of everything, since she and her younger brother Andrew spend every other weekend with their father and stepmother, and the rest of the time with their mother and their stepfather. This time, Karen is spending the weekend at her father's house. Karen thinks her neighbor Mrs. Porter is a witch named Morbidda Destiny because of the way she looks and acts. Karen is shocked to see Morbidda's cat Midnight on their doorstep after she arrives, and takes it as a bad omen. Later, she thinks she sees Morbidda Destiny fly out of her window in a broomstick with Midnight behind her, and the following day, overhears Morbidda Destiny in her garden talking about "company's coming" and "midnight". She thinks that Morbidda is going to have a meeting with other witches and warlocks at midnight and they are going to do something bad to the neighborhood. Karen takes it upon herself to save her neighborhood and tries to come up with a plan. Will she succeed in exposing the witch and her friends?
Review: I thought this was a fun book to read and a great start to the series. I liked how Karen sticks to her made up stories about Morbidda Destiny having meetings with other witches and warlocks, and how she and her friend Hannie have to conjure a spell with herbs and leaves to fight them. I also enjoyed the part where Karen sees Morbidda Destiny fly on a broomstick with her cat midnight, as this added an element of mystery as to whether Morbidda was really a witch or not. The illustrations were also very nicely drawn by Susan Tang, and I loved the one where Karen imagines herself in a parade that the mayor is throwing for her for exposing the witches.
Overall, I thought this was a great start for the Little Sister series in the Babysitters franchise, and would love to continue reading the series.

Karen's Witch (Baby-Sitters Little Sister, No. 1) Overview

The first book in the bestselling series for younger readers. The series follows the exploits of Karen Brewer, the spunky, bespeckled younger step-sister of Baby-sitters Club member Kristy.

Karen fell and broke her wrist doing tricks on her new skates. She wanted a famous person to sign her cast so she would be more popular than her friend Ricky who also has a cast. She told stories that weren't true because she thought the real story would be too boring. I liked this book because I also broke my arm one time. Karen's Toothache (Baby-Sitters Little Sister, No. 43) Review

Synopsis: Karen Brewer notices her tooth slowly hurting, but she doesn't take it too seriously. For you see, Karen starts watching Madame Valerie predict futures on TV, and after discovering "Your Daily Horoscope" section in the newspaper, Karen decides to become a fortune teller and tell the future of all her friends in Ms. Colman's class. When she notices her predictions coming true, Karen has too much fun to take her toothache seriously.
One day, when Ms. Colman announces that they are having an Autumn Leaves party in class, Karen and her friends have lots of fun decorating fall leaves, and baking fall shaped cookies. However, when Karen takes a bite of the cookie, her tooth aches a lot. Ms. Pazden, the school nurse informs Karen's mother about her toothache.
Dr. Rice, the family dentist, tells Karen that she needs to see Dr. Celenza to have her tooth pulled. Karen is not thrilled about this because she doesn't know what kind of a person Dr. Celenza would be, and she doesn't want to have her tooth pulled out either! As if this wasn't a problem, Karen declares that she has a fortune about Ms. Colman to the entire class, as a way to get their attention, but is not sure if the fortune will come true or not.
Can Karen survive her trip to the dentist, and make sure the fortunes she tells comes true, so that she doesn't get into trouble?
Review: I thought this was another fun book to read in the series. I actually enjoyed the fortuneteller part of the story more than the toothache/dentist part, because it was a lot of fun reading the various predictions Karen made for her friends. However, Karen's visit to Dr. Celenza was also interesting to read, as we got to see how wrong Karen was about the dentist.

The high point of the book for me was Karen announcing Ms. Colman's fortune to the class, because she wasn't sure if the prediction would come true or not, and it was surprising to see how the students responded to Ms. Colman's situation. But, I was also slightly disappointed with this part, because even after the students find out the truth about Ms. Colman, Karen doesn't get punished for giving out false information. She doesn't even get lectured on how dangerous making up facts could be in such situations.
The illustrations drawn by Susan Tang added well to the story, and I like the pictures where Karen is dressed as a fortuneteller and is giving out her friend's fortunes in school.
Overall, this was a nice addition to the Little Sister series, and I am looking forward to reading more.

Karen's Dinosaur (Baby-Sitters Little Sister) Review

Synopsis: Karen Brewer and her friends have been recently studying a lot about dinosaurs and how they lived. One day, Mrs. Hoffman, Karen's substitute teacher, makes an announcement to the second grade class, that they would be going to New York City, to the American Museum of Natural History as a field trip, to learn more about nature, minerals, rocks, history, people and more. Karen is also thrilled to hear that they would be taking the trip with their pen pals from Ms. Mandel's class in New York.
However, when she tells the news to David Michael, he becomes angry because his class is also learning about dinosaurs and his teacher did not tell them that they would be going to New York.
After doing a Hall of Fame and a "Wanted" poster of dinosaurs as a class activity, Karen and her pen pal Maxie Medvin decide on studying Ornitholestes as their dinosaur for the field trip. When Karen mentions this to David Michael, he tells that she is greedy because she gets to go to New York AND use the dinosaur that he selected to write a report on.
When Karen goes to New York with her class, she realizes that she should get a souvenir for her family and friends, but gets lost in the museum! Can she find her way back and stop fighting with David Michael as well?
Review: I thought this was a fun book to read, but still not as good as some of the other books in the series. It has a lot of details about dinosaurs and New York that made it interesting, but there was not much going on with the characters to make me consider this as one of the better ones in the series.
Except for Karen and David Michael's argument, and towards the end of the book where Karen gets lost in the museum, the rest of the book was like reading an information book on dinosaurs, which I don't think there is anything wrong with, but I just didn't find it that interesting.
However, I enjoyed Karen's argument with David Michael, and was wondering how Karen would find the others in the museum, even though she purposely got herself into trouble in the first place.
The illustrations provided by Susan Tang were nice, but again, I felt it didn't add well to the story. Since this book focused so much on dinosaurs, I thought there would be some illustrations about the various species of dinosaurs to go with the information, but there weren't any. I was a little disappointed in this matter, because I was hoping to see what an Ornitholestes looked like.
Overall, I thought there wasn't anything wrong with the book, and it had its moments at times, but it just wasn't interesting enough for me.

Karen's Dinosaur (Baby-Sitters Little Sister) Overview

Anticipating a fun-filled trip to New York City, where her class will visit the museum on the same day as her pen pal's class, Karen fears the trip will be spoiled for her by David Michael, who is furious that his class cannot go on the trip as well.
