Karen's Promise (Baby-Sitters Club Little Sister) Review

Synopsis: The book starts off with Karen thinking about her stepfather Seth moving with their mother to Chicago for six months. She spends every other month living with her father, and the rest of the year with her mother. She wonders what the situation would be if her mother and Seth moved to Chicago. Andrew asks Karen if she go anywhere without him. Karen promises Andrew that no matter what happens, she will stay with Andrew.
Later, when she talks with Nannie, her step grandmother, Nannie tells her how excited she is because she just received her first big order for making candy basket centerpieces for the hospital. When Ms. Colman announces that she is hosting a dinner at Stoneybrook Manor for the old people to raise money, Karen suggests she order candy baskets from Nannie, hoping that Nannie got more customers. However, when she mentions the news to Nannie, Nannie feels upset because she has a lot of work as it is. The children decide to help Nannie make the candy, but it ends up in a disaster! If matters weren't bad enough, the kids in the class overhear Nannie's candy, and want to sample some themselves!
When Karen's parents and her step parents hold a meeting, Karen's mother tells her that they would be taking Andrew to Chicago with them, but Karen can decide if she wants to stay in Stoneybrook or not. Karen is relieved that she can still stay in her school with her friends, but then she remembers her promise to Andrew. Karen's friends, Hannie and Nancy plead with her to reconsider and stay, but Karen doesn't know what to do. Afterward, in school, when Ms. Colman announces the students to do a group project on their selected cities, Karen suggests Chicago, so that she can learn more about it.
Will Karen decide to leave Stoneybrook and go to Chicago, and will Nannie be able to complete all her orders in time?
Review: I really liked reading this book, because it shows how hard it is to make decisions sometimes, and how the promises we make affect others. I sympathized with Karen as she had to decide whether or not she could go with the promise she made to Andrew.
I also enjoyed the main storyline, which I felt for Nannie's pressure to complete the orders, and how the children always made a mess of everything, causing Nannie more work and stress. The book also provided some useful information on the history of Chicago and the Great Fire that happened there.
The illustrations as always, were gorgeously drawn by Susan Tang, in which I especially admired the one where Karen, Kristy and Nannie look shocked over the spilled chocolate, and the one of Karen delivering the candy basket to the citizens of Stoneybrook Manor.
This book also ends in a suspenseful way, which I thought was interesting because other books in the series don't usually end this way, but I liked it because now it makes me want to pick up the next book "Karen's Big Move" and see what happens to her.
